Thai Food Day with DC Public Schools
Royal Thai Embassy and DC Public Schools organize Thai Food Day
On 6 November 2014, the Royal Thai Embassy and District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) jointly organized the Thai Food Day, on which around 45,000 students in over 100 public schools in the D.C. area had Thai food for breakfast and lunch. The Embassy and DCPS launched the Thai Food Day event at H.D. Cooke Elementary School – the school adopted by the Embassy under the Embassy Adoption Program (EAP) with the aim of providing American students with opportunity to learn about Thailand.
In his opening remarks, Mr. Saroj Thanasunti, Minister and Deputy Chief of Mission, informed the students about Thailand and the special ties between Thailand and the United States given the fact that His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The students also learnt about Thailand’s location, flag, national animal, food, language as well as the Loy Krathong Festival or the Festival of Lights, which this year falls on 6 November, the same day the Thai Food Day was held. Ms. Kathryn Larkin, Principal of H.D. Cooke Elementary School, representatives from DCPS and Washington Performing Arts, local press and over 300 students and school staff also attended the event.
During the event launching ceremony, the students enjoyed performances of traditional Thai dances and Muay Thai, and participated in the “How well do you know Thailand?” quiz. In addition, the Embassy arranged three booths where the students broadened their knowledge about Thailand. These included a Thai language booth with Dr. Prawet Jantharat, Coordinator of the Network of Thai Language Professors in the United States as the instructor, a booth featuring the art of fruit and vegetable carving, with give-away samples of Thailand’s famous golden thread cake (Foi Tong cake), and an information booth on the Festival of Lights. The School also set up a booth for the students to write comments about their impression on the event and on Thailand in general.
