Prime Minister vows to catch high-level human traffickers

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has ordered his government to enhance coordination between police, prosecutors and the courts in the fight against human trafficking so that trafficking syndicate leaders can be brought to justice and a more systematic and effective approach to the problem can be employed.  Read more

Charter debates heat up; drafter says elections certain in 2016

Sharp disagreements emerged last week between members of the National Reform Council and the Constitution Drafting Committee about several elements in the charter being drafted by the Committee.  The head of the charter Committee said, meanwhile, that elections would surely take place in 2016. Government wants more private sector infrastructure funding

The government wants more public-private partnerships in funding its eight-year infrastructure upgrade that will require over US$60 billion in national investment, the Minister of Finance said last week, adding that non-state sources should make up approximately half the funds devoted to the various projects.  Read more

National data center planned for digital economy

The government plans to enlist the private sector to help it fund and build a US$1.23 billion national data center to support the development of the digital economy, as a deputy prime minister vowed last week that every community would have high-speed Internet access by the end of 2016.  Read more

Police arrest ivory and drug smugglers

Thai police arrested a Malaysian and Thai man last week who they said were behind a major smuggling operation for African ivory to Asia, while separately police in Bangkok and Chonburi nabbed one Russian and three Iranians they claim were part of a drug smuggling syndicate specializing in crystal methamphetamines.  Read more
