Martial law lifted, business welcomes move

The Thai and foreign business communities welcomed Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha’s decision to lift martial law last week, saying it would improve business sentiment, while the government works to allay concerns expressed by human rights groups about the executive powers under the interim constitution.  Read more

Prime Minister will act to solve air safety concerns

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said last week that he will use his broad power under the interim constitution to speed up all measures necessary to meet concerns raised by the International Civil Aviation Authority (ICAO) over lack of capacity in Thailand’s Department of Civil Aviation, concerns that had been ignored by previous governments for a decade.  Read more

Trafficked migrants intercepted in transit to Malaysia

Thai authorities intercepted 76 migrants, including six members of Myanmar’s ethnic Rohingya minority, while they were being transported to Malaysia in what is believed to have been a trafficking operation, as a Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson detailed the Kingdom’s anti-trafficking enforcement gains in a press briefing last week.  Read more

Measures to improve gender equality and child protection

Thailand continued to take steps to improve the lives of its women and children as last week the country’s charter drafters approved a measure to promote greater representation for women in government and a key ministry said it would strengthen laws to protect children.  Read more

Investment privileges for industries in special economic zones

The Board of Investment announced last week it will grant a full range of privileges for businesses in 13 industries if they locate in any of five special economic zones (SEZs) located along Thailand’s borders with neighboring countries.  Read more
