Ambassador Virachai Plasai joined “CPTPP, RCEP and the Future of Asian Trade” discussion organized by Asia Society Policy Institute (ASPI)


On January 10, 2019, Ambassador Virachai Plasai joined distinguished panelists in a discussion on “CPTPP, RCEP and the Future of Asian Trade” organized by Asia Society Policy Institute (ASPI) at the Mayflower Hotel.

During the discussion, Ambassador Virachai acknowledged that concluding RCEP negotiations will be a gigantic task. However, he believed that, Thailand, as current ASEAN Chair, will be able to strike a right balance between political will and technical innovativeness, that is necessary to take RCEP negotiations to the finishing line in 2019.

The panel discussion was moderated by Wendy Cutler, ASPI Vice President, with opening remarks by former U.S. Trade Representative, Ambassador Michael Froman. Other panelists included Ambassador Kenichiro Sasae, President and Director General of the Japan Institute of International Affairs and former Ambassador of Japan to the United States, Ambassador Ashok Mirpuri of Singapore, and Professor Peter Petri from Brandeis University.
