ASEAN Senior Officials and ASEAN Deputy Secretary-General Visited Tham Luang-Khun Nam Nang Non Forest Park, 8 March 2019


On 8 March 2019, Mrs. Busaya Mathelin, Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs of Thailand, led Senior Officials of ASEAN Member States and the Deputy ASEAN Secretary-General to visit Tham Luang-Khun Nam Nang Non Forest Park, Chiang Rai, during the ASEAN Senior Officials’ Meeting (SOM), held between 6 – 8 March 2019. They were welcomed by Mr. Prajon Prachsakul, Governor of Chiang Rai, Dr. Kamolchai Kotcha, Director of Protected Areas Regional Office 15, Mr. Kawee Prasompol, Head of Tham Luang-Khun Nam Nang Non Forest Park.

On this occasion, Mr. Vernon Unsworth and Mr. Joshua David Morris – experienced cave divers who played crucial parts in the ‘Wild Boars’ rescue operation and Mr. Chaiyon Srisamut, Member of Chiang Rai Provincial Administrative Organization (PAO), briefed the delegation on the ‘Wild Boars’ rescue operation and cooperation from all parties from within Thailand and the International community.

During their visit, the ASEAN Senior Officials were greeted by a surprise guest – the 13 Wild Boars. On this occasion, the senior officials also handed over sport equipment to the 13 Wild Boars and student representatives from 9 nearby local schools in the Mae Sai district.
