Message from Department of State Spokesperson Morgan Ortagus on Songkran Thai New Year

Press Statement

Morgan Ortagus
Department Spokesperson
Washington, DC
April 11, 2019

On behalf of the Government of the United States of America, I wish the people of the Kingdom of Thailand a joyous celebration of Songkran, the festival of the New Year.

The United States of America is proud to call the Kingdom of Thailand our oldest friend and ally in mainland Southeast Asia, having marked 200 years of friendship in 2018. Over the years, we have continually invested in our partnership through security, law enforcement, business, health, education, and military cooperation. We have also supported each other during times of crisis, most recently demonstrated last July during Thailand’s amazing rescue of the Wild Boar football team.

As we look forward, the United States reaffirms our commitment to the Kingdom of Thailand to build even greater connections between our nations and people, and advance mutual prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.

We wish all Thai people a healthy and prosperous New Year.
