Webinar “Forging Thailand-U.S. Climate and Energy Partnership”

H.E. Mr. Kulit Sombatsiri, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy of Thailand, Ambassador Manasvi Srisodapol and Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Energy Resources Harry Kamian and former Deputy Secretary of Energy Mark Menezes, shared their views on areas where Thailand and the U.S. should develop concrete and affirmative climate and energy cooperation at the Webinar “Forging Thailand-U.S. Climate and Energy Partnership” on 23 November 2021. They also welcomed Thailand Prime Minister’s recent pledge at COP26 to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and net-zero GHGs emissions by 2065.

Their remarks were followed by a panel discussion by Ms. Verinda Fike, Regional Manager for the Indo-Pacific, U.S. Trade and Development Agency,  Mr. Noppadol Dej-Udom, Chief Sustainability Officer, Charoen Pokphand Group Company Limited , and Ms. Courtney Weatherby, Research Analyst and Deputy Director, Energy, Water, and Sustainability, Southeast Asia, The Stimson Center.   The discussants identified many areas of possible cooperation, including EVs ecosystem, renewable energy infrastructure, energy storage, smart grid and grid efficiency, regional energy market development etc. as well as highlighted the important role of Thai and U.S. private sectors in mutual efforts to tackle climate crisis.

The webinar was the third of the New Opportunities for the United States-Kingdom of Thailand Alliance in the Indo-Pacific webinar series, a collaboration between the Royal Thai Embassy, Washington, D.C., the East-West Center in Washington, D.C., the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, and the International Studies Center to further promote engagement and better understanding between the United States and Thailand’s respective government officials, parliamentarians, private sectors,  academic and think tank analysts, and the general public.
