Thailand named best country in Asia for retirees

Thailand was once again rated the best country in Asia for retirees and the 11th best in the world by International Living magazine in its 2022 Global Retirement Index. In its assessment, the magazine cited the appeal of the Kingdom’s people and culture, cost of living, quality healthcare and tasty food.

International Living looked at a variety of factors important to retirees in putting together its rankings. Important categories included housing, benefits, ease of visa and residence procedures, entertainment, and climate.

“Why are thousands of people retiring in Thailand? Is it the lure of intriguing culture and people? Perhaps the lush year-round climate combined with fresh tropical fruits, vegetables, and seafood? Is it the low-cost healthcare and cost of living? Or maybe the ease of travelling within Thailand, and throughout neighboring Southeast Asian countries?” the magazine asked.

“In reality, it is a combination of all of the above and more. With its warm climate, inexpensive cost of living, and beautiful scenery, it is easy to see why Thailand attracts retirees from across the globe,” the magazine wrote.

Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket and Hua Hin were named as the top cities to stay in. The magazine calculated the average costs to a single retiree at about $1,000 a month, and an apartment would cost around $400 to $500. Those figures could vary widely depending upon location.

International Living wrote that its “Retirement Index is the most comprehensive and in-depth survey of its kind. Our index is informed by hundreds of opinions and real-life experiences—information—compiled by our trusted sources in the best retirement destinations across the globe.“
