Thailand will host 2022 Global Summit of Women
Prominent and powerful women from around the world will gather in Bangkok this June when Thailand hosts the 2022 Global Summit of Women. The conference will focus on how women are driving the post-pandemic recovery.
Leading women in business and government from more than 50 countries will participate in the 32nd iteration of the Summit. With respect for Mother Earth, Thai organizers are taking measures to ensure the event will be carbon neutral. Thailand was scheduled to host the gathering in 2020, but the meeting was postponed due to complicated international travel during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Irene Natividad, President of the Global Summit of Women 2020, noted that the Kingdom is an excellent choice as the host because “Thailand ranks high in women’s economic participation in business and government at both the regional and global levels.”
This year’s Summit will prioritize women’s engagement in economic recovery after COVID-19, which has caused many changes in lifestyles and ways of doing business, according to Nichapa Yoswee, Senior Vice President of the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau. It will also focus on the role of technology and innovation in this transformation.
Analysts with the World Bank have added that the impacts of the pandemic have been tougher on women than men. Women have lost jobs at a higher rate than their male counterparts since the onset of COVID-19.
The Washington Post reported that in the first year of the pandemic an estimated 54 million women around the world became unemployed. “In Thailand, 30 percent of women work in sectors vulnerable to the economic effects of the pandemic,” according to the Post.
Now, at the Summit, Thai women will play a part in leading the way to a better and more equitable post-pandemic economy and society both in the Kingdom and around the world.
