Travel & Leisure readers rate Bangkok best city in Southeast Asia

Bangkok and the beach resort islands of Phuket and Koh Samui topped a Travel & Leisure poll for the best cities and islands in Southeast Asia, with the Thai capital ranked first in the Best Cities category and Phuket and Koh Samui ranked first and second, respectively, in Best Islands.

The survey results underscore Thailand’s resilient appeal as a travel destination despite the difficult times resulting from the global pandemic over the past two-and-a-half years. The Kingdom never lost its luster even through the period when public health measures were applied.

Travel & Leisure is published in New York City and claims to have 4.8 million readers each month. Its website said that the reasons are endless for Bangkok’s consistent ranking as a great city to visit.

“If warm smiles, spicy street food, and feeling the wind in your hair as you glide through the city on a motorbike or tuk-tuk are appealing, Bangkok certainly hits the mark,” the T&L website mentioned.

The publication made it clear that the capital offers topnotch experiences at every level and price point.

“If you prefer high-thread-count linens in your private-pool suites and Michelin-starred meals, the city also has you covered. Whether you are just spending a night en route to the islands, using Bangkok as a hub for further exploration of Southeast Asia, or visiting for what we advocate should be a dedicated vacation in its own right, there is no shortage of options,” T&L said.

Phuket and Samui took the top spots in the Best Island category, followed by Bali (Indonesia), Phu Quoc (Vietnam), Langkawi (Malaysia), Lombok (Indonesia), Palawan (the Philippines), Penang (Malaysia), Phi Phi (Thailand) and Con Dao (Vietnam).
