Thai Airways back to winning ways for awards

Thai Airways International has returned to its winning ways, as Skytrax ranked the national carrier’s cabin crews as the fourth best in the world and its airline staff the best in Asia in its 2022 World Airline Awards.

London-based Skytrax, which is the most well-known airline research and ranking consultancy in the world, also awarded Thai Airways eighth place in the world’s best airport services; eighth in best economy class airline catering, and 10th in first-class airline lounges.

Joining Thai Airways in the winner’s circle was privately owned Bangkok Airways, which Skytrax named the World’s Best Regional Airline and the Best Regional Airline in Asia.

The honors reinforce Thailand’s goal of promoting its role as the hub for travel and tourism, gaining recognition for its advanced aviation and aerospace industries and solidifying its status as an aviation hub in Asia and the Pacific.

The awards represented a resurrection of sorts for Thai Airways. During the 1980s and 1990s, the carrier earned a reputation as one of the best airlines in the world for its service and reliability. But in 1997 during the erupted Asian economic crisis, the company was adversely affected. Since then, the airline has struggled under competition from smaller budget airlines, the number of which exploded in the early 2000s.

Although its business ceased during the pandemic, after its latest restructuring plan, the airline returned to profitability earlier this year.

Now, with a basket full of awards under its belt, the skies appear clear for THAI to once again live up to its motto of “smooth as silk.”
