Ambassador Tanee hosted a working lunch for ASEAN Committee in Washington (ACW), the National Security Council, and the Department of State
On 9 March 2023, Mr. Tanee Sangrat, Ambassador of Thailand to the US hosted a working lunch for ASEAN Committee in Washington, National Security Council as well as the Department of State at his residence. Participants include Dr. Kurt Campbell, Deputy Assistant to the President and Coordinator for the Indo-Pacific, Ambassador Yohannes Abraham, US Ambassador to ASEAN, Dr. Jung Pak, Deputy Assistant Secretary, Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs, officials of the NSC, and the Department of State, as well as Ambassadors and representatives from all ASEAN countries.
Ambassador Tanee emphasized the importance of implementing the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP) between ASEAN-US for tangible outcomes. He also identified possible areas of cooperation such as economic recovery through digital cooperation and IPEF, climate action and SDGs, narrowing development gaps and public health through the ASEAN Centre for Public Health Emergencies and Emerging Diseases (ACPHEED).
Ambassador Tanee expressed Thailand’s readiness to cooperate with the US on development cooperation in the Mekong region through the Mekong-US Partnership (MUSP).
Ambassador Tanee also discussed the commemoration of 190 years of Thai-US diplomatic relations this year, aiming at elevating the Thai-US alliance and relations through high level visits of Ministers participating at APEC meetings during the US host year. The Thai embassy will also organize events throughout the year such as a roundtable discussion on Thailand and the US Relations at 190 Years: Past, Present, Future on 20 March 2023 in collaboration with the Asia Foundation and the Thai-US Alliance Festival in July at the National Mall.
The US side reiterated the importance of cooperation with ASEAN and assured that the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP) will produce tangible outcomes as the US is launching the US- ASEAN Institute for Rising Leaders Fellowship this year. In addition, the US reassured the ASEAN side that she will manage her competition with China responsibly and also aspires to see peace and security in the region.
